Linda Hartzell & Kurt Beattie

Live Theatre and the Cultural Forces That Shape It
Long-time friends Linda Hartzell, artistic director of Seattle Children’s Theatre (SCT) and Kurt Beattie, artistic director of ACT Theatre, both of whom played important roles in the evolution of Seattle theatre, will discuss cultural forces that shaped our region’s theatrical institutions and the value of theatre as art to understanding contemporary life.
Under Linda Hartzell, SCT grew from a small troupe to the nation’s second largest professional children’s theatre company—performing for annual audiences of more than 120,000 children and their families and serving nearly 13,000 area students through innovative educational programs and outreach.
Actor/director Kurt Beattie, a familiar presence on Seattle stages for more than three decades, brought his extensive experience and visionary approach to ACT (A Contemporary Theatre) in 2003. The only theatre in Seattle dedicated to producing contemporary work with promising playwrights and local performing artists, Beattie presides over a flourishing “interactive community where artists and the public witness, contemplate and engage in dialogue on today’s thought-provoking issues, ideas and art.”
