Romeo & Juliet & Original Works

VHS Theater Tickets: $10/$13

This spring Vashon Allied Arts Center for Dance performs one of literature’s timeless love stories, Romeo and Juliet. Russian composer Sergie Prokofiev scored Shakespeare’s play for ballet in 1935, and the work has since become an enduring classic.

The cast of 60, according to Artistic Director Christine Juarez, will perform an edited version and showcases senior dancer Catherine Misel as Juliet. “She has excellent technique and is a wonderful dramatic dancer,” says Juarez. Cornish guest danseur, Sam Opsel will dance as Romeo. Meg Sayre brings the role of Nursemaid to life and danseur Quinn McTighe plays Romeo’s hot-tempered rival Tybalt. Adult dancers join the cast with Kirsten Eastman as Lady Capulet and Barbara Gustafson as the village Flower Peddler. “She will provide the continuous thread that runs through the entire show,” adds Juarez. Ballet 2 dancers (age 8) join in as flower and fruit sellers.

“The last several ballets have been more ‘white ballets.’ I wanted to stage a more narrative ballet. The romance of Romeo and Juliet is so exciting and colorful,” says Juarez. The company received stage combat instruction from a guest Cornish teacher.

The spring performance also highlights VAA Center for Dance modern and jazz programs. Students submit original choreography, pieces are juried and recipients polish their original works for stage. Fond of the tradition, Juarez says. “I love seeing the individual voices come through their choreography and see their passion. They often choose duets, where they also learn a lot about collaboration.”

Juarez lauds her loyal production crew including costumer Kate Guinee and set painter Laura Whitmore. “Our performance space is always challenging. We will use the entire theater space with surprises for the audience.” Holly Goddard transforms the lobby space into an Italian themed mercato with a bounty of thoughtful, dancer-made Mother’s Day gifts options and delectable treats.
